The Radley Acura dealership in Arlington, VA event was phenomenal!  More than 70 new winter coats were donated, carols were sung and visibility and awareness raised about the tremendous impact that a new winter coat has on a child who has never had one.

MPD Continues Program with Coats for Kids

The Metropolitan Police Department continued this year the program began groomes.jpglast year to provide new winter coats to kids in DC who have never had one.  The first distribution was for three children in Southeast DC,  The second distribution in Northeast DC was at a community center.  Deputy Chief Dianne Groomes and other on and off-duty officers helped get the coats, hats, scarves and gloves matched up for mothers and grandmothers who were taking the more than 30 new coats home for their kids.

This year, MPD has scaled back plans for this year's coat distribution and plan to have given 200 children new winter coats before Christmas.

Coats Delivered Outside DC Region Must Have Local Fundraising Support

For the past four years, the Coats for Kids Foundation has had significant support that has allowed us to meet the need for winter coats far beyond our immediate area.  In fact, we have delivered coats to 26 states and the District of Columbia!  Almost 7,000 of the 12,000 new coats have been distributed in VA, DC, MD!

Today, we very much want to continue to help groups outside of our area, but our funding sources require us to give a clear, focused  priority to Alexandria, VA and the surrounding DC metropolitan area.

Coats for Kids Meets with CFC's DoD Leaders
The Coats for Kids Foundation continues its outreach to the Federal Government employees as part of the annual CFC.

"We went to this meeting with the sole objective of helping these leaders who will work with each of the agencies and military services better understand how CFC helps small local charities who do not have paid staff, " said Paul Darby, president of the Coats for Kids Foundation.

CFK was asked to personalize the campaign for these leaders on behalf of the nearly  4,000 local charities who are a part of the 2008 campaign.

CFK emphasized that each of these charities participated in a very thorough application process which required each charity to provide three years' financial reports (IRS 990s), a copy of its 501C3 approval letter from the IRS, and demonstrated results of how the charity provides and measures service to the capitol region.

Operation Warm Partnership Announced!
The Coats for Kids Foundation, headquartered in Alexandria, VA, has finalized an important, new partnership with Operation Warm, headquartered in Chadds Ford, PA.   In announcing the partnership, Paul Darby, president of the Coats for Kids Foundation said, “We have grown our program over these past four years to a greater extent than we ever expected by delivering more than 12,000 new winter coats to needy kids.  Today, we are taking the next step in our growth and evolution by partnering with Operation Warm, a ten-year old organization that shares the same commitment that we have to put new coats on needy children.”  Dick Sanford, founder of Operation Warm, said “We are thrilled to be working with Paul & Cheryl Darby and the Coats for Kids Foundation.  Our combined efforts will, without a doubt, provide many more winter coats to children in need!”
The partnership will allow the Coats for Kids Foundation to access all of the “back room” functions of Operation Warm which this past year delivered 126,000 new winter coats to recipient organizations for distribution to needy kids.  These functions include:   <--Accessing a guaranteed supply of high quality, new winter coats designed by and for Operation Warm—four styles in three distinct color combinations, <!---A state-of-the-art logistics system which will process and pack our requests for new coats, and  delivery by Federal Express to recipient organizations. “We realized earlier this year that Coats for Kids could not continue to grow without a dedicated staff and a logistics system linked directly to our internet-based order-entry system,” said Paul Darby.   “Coats for Kids could not obtain the discounted rates for outbound shipping to recipient organizations or the tremendous advantages that come from our partnering with an organization that directly purchases 100,000-plus new winter coats.  And with energy costs skyrocketing, we also were unable to develop a cost-effective shipping relationship to get new coats from manufacturers to our warehouse in Virginia.” “This new program does not change our responding to requests from any U.S.-based recipient organization (provided that we have the undesignated funds or that local funds are raised) or receiving donated new winter coats with tags attached, or the USAF ACQ/IMA new coat drive at Christmas.  We recognize that many families and individuals want to physically purchase and donate new coats, and we are grateful for their commitment to the Coats for Kids Foundation,” Darby added.

New Order System On-Line

The new order system is on-line and it is different from prior years.  Here's how:

 1.  All coats in the Washington DC metro region (MD, VA, DC) are underwritten by contributions from the Combined Federal Campaign (federal employees via payroll deduction), Kids Helping Kids, Inc., Alexandria, VA, and the Susswein-Gottesman Fund, Alexandria, VA.

2.  Fundraising will be necessary at the local, community level, to offset CFK's expenses to source and ship the coats outside of the DC metro region.
